Obituary for Sylvia Hyde Trevor (Schmokel)

Sylvia Hyde Trevor (Schmokel)
Sylvia H. (Schmokel) Trevor
Stowe
Sylvia Hyde (Schmokel) Trevor, 55, passed away on Friday, August 15, 2014 at the Vermont Respite House after struggling courageously with cancer.
Sylvia was born on January 8, 1959 in New Haven, Connecticut to Wolfe and Varian Schmokel. Her family moved up to Essex, VT when she was young and she spent her childhood there. Sylvia attended Westover School in Middlebury, CT and obtained her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Vermont. After graduation, she spent many years living in New York City working at Prentice Hall Publishing and taking art classes at Cooper Union. Eventually, Sylvia married and returned to Vermont to raise her children. Sylvia did not remain married, but ended up settling in Stowe, Vermont where she lived the past 20 years.
Sylvia always sought out ways to express her creative energies. She was a talented painter and enjoyed playing piano as well as singing in the Stowe Community Church. She was also deeply spiritual and a member of the Circle of Friends in Lamoille County.
Sylvia was an avid traveler. She took many trips to Europe, particularly Germany, France and Italy. She had incredible talent with languages and enjoyed practicing her German, French and Italian skills while abroad.
Sylvia is survived by her two sons, Gareth and Kyle Trevor of Stowe and the father of her children Thomas Trevor of Sarasota, Florida. She also leaves behind her father and stepmother, Wolfe and Kay Schmokel, as well as a sister, Clarissa Adams and husband Krister of Waterbury, VT, two brothers- Frederick Schmokel and wife Kathy of Alexandria, VA, and Marcus Schmokel and wife Mary, of Canton, Georgia and her former sister-in-law, Sarah McAllister of Middlesex, Vermont. In addition, she leaves behind nieces and nephews including Sydney Adams, Erik and Kurt Schmokel, Alex Schmokel and Gwen Cole along with 2 great-nephews and a great-niece. She was predeceased by her mother, Varian Schmokel.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2014 at the Stowe Community Church at 11 a.m. Sylvia requested that those in attendance wear blue and white as she was not a fan of black. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Lamoille Home Health and Hospice, 54 Farr Avenue, Morrisville, VT 05661 or Vermont Respite House, 99 Allen Brook Lane, Williston, VT 05495.
