Obituary for Carmen J. Phelps
Carmen J. Phelps, 62, of Hardwick, Vt. Passed away on 1/18/2023 from complications due to pancreatic cancer with her sister Linda by her side in Johnson, Vt.
Carmen was born on 12/20/1960 to Nellie Phelps in Keene, N.H. She moved to the Hardwick area later in life and had been a resident there for 33 years. She loved the area made many friends and had no desire to move anywhere else.
Carmen loved life. She had a beautiful smile and a laugh that was very contagious. A graduate from CCV where she earned an Associates Degree in Liberal Arts. She was a fantastic cook and loved to bake. Always looking for new recipes to try. Loved doing crafts, painting, berry picking, hiking, road trips, gardening, camping, cookouts, the holidays were very special to her and the list goes on. Canning was a favorite of hers was well known for her “dilly beans.” Her grandchildren were the highlight of her life she enjoyed every minute she had with them whether it was playing games, baking, reading to them or just watching a special movie.
Carmen leaves behind her sister Linda Smith of Johnson, Vt., daughter Tonya Burnor and son-in-law Andy Burnor of Hardwick, Vt. Her grandchildren Cloe Phelps and Jordan Phelps also of Hardwick, Vt. Her niece Vesper Bitle of N.C., nephews Bill Smith of Gorham, Me., Scott Smith of Milton, Vt., and Steven Smith of Charlotte, Vt. many great nieces and nephews as well as great-great nieces and nephews along with a few cousins.
Carmen also leaves behind her best friend and part of the family Jen Davidson of Hardwick, Vt. and Jens extended family. She will also be greatly missed by her elder cat “Rango.”
Carmen was pre-deceased by her mother Nellie Phelps, her adopted father Ernie Phelps, sister Mona Colburn and nephew Mark Smith.
I want to thank family, friends and staff from Hospice for their unconditional support and love in the final moments of my dear sister's life.
Per Carmen’s wishes there will be no services at this time. A celebration of her life will be held in the summer at her happy place where her ashes will be distributed. Memories and condolences may be shared by visiting www.awrth.com.
