Obituary for Irving James Mossey

Irving James Mossey
Irving James Mossey, 65 of Jeffersonville passed away on Tuesday January 9, 2018 at the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington surrounded by family following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on January 11, 1952 in Burlington son of the late Irving and Marjorie (Denton) Mossey.

Irving, known by his friends and loved ones as “Dunney”, met Michelle, his lifelong love, through his cousin while he was working at his parents’ convenient store in Georgia, VT in 1969. They married in 1971 at the Holy Angels Church in St. Albans, VT. Shortly after, they built their first home in Georgia. They spent a short time there before then building a home in Westford where they spent their next eight years. Irving and Michelle always knew they wanted children, so they sold their home in Westford and built their forever home where they raised their four children. One of Irving’s greatest treasures were his family and especially his children and grandchildren.

Irving started his career working as a builder with his brother-in-law, Winfred Decker. At 24, he and Winfred both shifted careers and turned to logging. They worked together for a couple years until Irving went on his own, making a lifelong career of logging. When Irving wasn't logging he was spending time with his wife and kids. A lot of time Irving brought his kids to work and showed them everything he knew. From hunting to fishing to working, Irving always had his family close by. He was an avid and successful hunter, hunting everything from squirrels to white-tailed deer and everything in between. He loved to talk about hunting and logging memories and was known for his successes in both. Irving and his family started a maple sugaring business in 2011 and built a sugar house alongside his sons and wife. He was so proud of his sugar house and took pride in making it perfect. In 2014, Irving found out he was going to be a grandpa! In March of 2015, he welcomed his first granddaughter and in the following years, he was blessed with three more granddaughters. They were his pride and joy and shared such an amazing bond. He never had a conversation where "his girls" weren't brought up. Everyone who knew Irving knew that he loved his granddaughters beyond words. He looked forward to being able to have sleepovers and simply just watching his girls grow together. The girls knew that grandpa loved them and they loved the time that they spent with him. Irving was such a genuine, caring, loving soul that will be missed by everyone he knew. Heaven gained a truly amazing angel.

Irving is survived by his loving wife of 46 years Michelle (Raymond) Mossey, two sons James Mossey and wife Sophia, Jacob Mossey and fiancée Lily Wilson, two daughters Felicia Mossey and fiancé Joshua Gadue, Lura Mossey and fiancé Nicholas Marsh, father Edward Cote, his brother Mark Mossey, sisters Aleta Decker and husband Winfred, Donna Beyor and husband Doug, Cheryl Letourneau, Debbie Wimble and husband David, Theresa, 4 grandchildren Ayla & Josephine Marsh, Briella Gadue, AryaEve Mossey, many nieces nephews, cousins and his granddogRemi.

He was also predeceased by his brother Alan Mossey and brother-in-law Chris Letourneau.

Visiting hours will be held on Sunday January 14, 2018 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at A W Rich Funeral Home – Fairfax Chapel, 1176 Main Street, Fairfax, VT 05454. Per Irving’s wishes there will be no other services held. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 55 Day Lane, Williston, VT 05495 or to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Attn: Tribute Program, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942.
